The fine mosaics discovered here were celebrated among scholars of antiquity. We'll have a light-lunch in a country-restaurant. In the afternoon, we visit the baroque town of Caltagirone, known as "the city of ceramics". Ceramics have been produced here for over 1000 years. We'll climb the Stairway of Santa Maria del Monte, city's symbol, made out of 142 steps, decorated with splendid glazed majolica tiles. We will continue the trip to Taormina (BB L)

Day 2 - (Sunday): Palermo - Monreale.
Morning walking tour through the old city centre, including a visit to the lovely Capo Market. Continue to the Massimo Theatre square and visit the Palatine Chapel and Hall of King Roger II, the Four Corners and the great Pretoria Square, with the lovely fountain. Afternoon dedicated to the visit to Monreale, to admire the 6340 square meters gold mosaics into the Dome. Return to Palermo. Enjoy dinner on your own. (BB)
Day 3 - (Monday): Cefalu'- Piazza Armerina.
Today departure to Cefalù, a charming coastal town: it has a massive Norman Cathedral with outstanding mosaics. Here, we'll visit the city centre, and enjoy a walk in the main street to reach the Cathedral. Then, we'll drive through the heart of Sicily to reach Piazza Armerina. Time at leisure for your own lunch. You will then tour the remains of one of the most sumptuous villas of the late Roman Empire, whose floor mosaics comprise the most vital and colorful manifestation of Roman figurative art in Europe. Continue across the island to reach Taormina. Dinner at the hotel. (BB D)
Day 4 - (Tuesday): Catania - Syracuse.
Today we depart to reach Catania, the city of lava standing in the ominous shadow of Mount

Day by day itinerary

Day 1 - Mount Etna, Taormina and Catania.
We start the day with an excursion to Sicily's most impressive volcano, the "Monte Etna"; Thought by the Greeks to be the forge of the fire God Efesto. Lunch in local restaurant. Later we head to Taormina, whose ancient theatre boasts a stunning panoramic position high above the coastline. In the evening return to the hotel.
Day 2 - Siracusa and Catania.
Siracusa, the city of the archaeological remains, home of the extraordinary cathedral which incorporates the Temple of Minerva. After a guided tour in the city, we will have a lunch in a local restaurant. Then head to the "black city" of Catania to explore its magnificent lava monuments and its Baroque city centre. In the evening return to the hotel.
Day 3 - Piazza Armerina, Agrigento and Palermo.
Our day begins with the visit of the Roman Villa in Piazza Armerina called "Villa del Casale", famous for its vivid collection of mosaic floor. Lunch in local restaurant. Then head to Agrigento for a guided tour of the valley of the Greek temples, home of the most impressive array of Greek structures. In the evening we will reach the capital of Sicily, Palermo.
Day 4 - Palermo and Monreale.
Palermo incorporates a unique mixture of architectural style: Arabic, Norman and Baroque. A guided tour will take us to the most important monuments of this splendid city. Lunch in local restaurant. Afternoon dedicated to Monreale, to visit the cathedral, a unique masterpiece of Norman craftsmanship adorned with glistening mosaics and wonderfully carved cloisters.
