This semi private, small group tour (20 person limit), with guaranteed departures (SATURDAY from Palermo), is for English speaking clients only, with accommodations in 4 star standard properties, visits the principal sites of Sicily.

          Day by day itinerary
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 (Saturday): Palermo.
Welcome to the wonderful island of Sicily! After landing at Palermo airport please proceed through the routine arrival checks and collect your luggage. Then independently transfer to your hotel. Tonight, meet your fellow travelers and Tour Director who will make brief introduction, afterwards enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

Day 2 (Sunday): Monreale and Palermo.
Breakfast at hotel. Our first stop today is Monreale where the Arab-Norman art and architecture is represented at its peak in the Duomo, began in 1174 by William II. Scenes are depicted in golden mosaics from the Old and New Testaments. Returning to Palermo you will visit the Palatine Chapel, the crowning architectural achievement of William II's grandfather, Roger II. Our tour continues to Palermo's highlights: Piazza Pretoria and Via Maqueda with its "four corners" converging at a quartet of Baroque palaces dating back to 1560 from the height of Spanish rule. Your afternoon is free to explore the town on your own or OPTIONAL EXCURSION (see optional excursion 1 below). (BB)

Day 3 (Monday): Palermo, Cefalù, Polizzi Generosa and Taormina.
This morning we depart for Cefalù, a charming coastal town, a former fishing village, which is

also home to a breathtaking Norman Cathedral with dazzling mosaics. Take a stroll to the city center and down main street to reach the Cathedral. Next, we drive across the vast countryside of the Madonie Park showcasing Sicily's great variety of microclimates. The territory of the Madonie mountains is a paradise of contrasts, and a bit off the beaten track. We will visit Polizzi Generosa-a delightful
delightful town nestled in the heart of the Madonie Natural Park. You will experience a simpler time viewing the ancient masseria transformed into a farmhouse, the flourmills utilizing the plentiful water supply of the area, and the furnaces still used today to make ceramics. Enjoy a light lunch at a country trattoria tasting typical local dishes. This afternoon we will continue to Taormina, the principal resort town of Sicily. (BB L)

Day 4 (Tuesday): Taormina, Siracusa and Taormina.
Today it's a visit to Syracuse. First we will visit the exceptional Archaeological Park where we will explore the 5th-century BC Greek Theatre, the stone quarries, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Paradise Quarry. We will later walk through the island of Ortigia, the picturesque and fascinating original center of Syracuse. Today's lunch is at a local Syracuse restaurant. In the afternoon we return to Taormina. Day 5 (Wednesday): Taormina.
A free day to relax, shop, explore or OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS (see optional excursions below). (BB)

Day 6 (Thursday): Taormina, Piazza Armerina and Agrigento.
After breakfast, we will drive south to the interior of Sicily to Piazza Armerina* for a visit to the ruins of the Roman Villa of Casale. The fabulous mosaics discovered here are highly regarded by scholars of antiquity. This afternoon we continue to Agrigento where you will walk through the Valley of the Temples; a picturesque group of Greek ruins perched on a hill above the Mediterranean Sea. Dinner will be at local restaurant. Afterwards we enjoy an evening tour of Agrigento by night to see the Illuminated temples, before returning to our hotel. (BB D)
*(From November 1, 2008 the Roman Villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina will be closed for renovation, we will advise our clients of the estimated new opening date as soon as we have it. We will substitute a stop in the historic ruins of Morgantina for an independent visit to the site -or- with Caltagrione, a city known for it's for Sicilian pottery and ceramics. Take a stroll through the city center and climb the famous steps decorated with ceramic tiles, while shopping for Sicilian ceramics).

Day 7 (Friday): Agrigento, Marsala Winery, Salt Way Road, Erice and Palermo.
Our tour of western Sicily begins in Marsala today. The town is best known for its unique 
Erice
wine and probably the most famous wine on the island. First, we will go to a local winery and visit the cellars. Everyone is invited for a Farewell Cocktail with snacks and wines. But we still have more to see, in the lovely province of Trapani where we will ride along the Salt Way Road past picturesque Sicilian windmills. Then climb up to the unspoiled medieval hillside town of Erice. We will stroll through the town to the Castle built upon the original site of
Villa Romana Piazza Armerina
site of the Temple of Venus. We will finish our visit at a local pastry shop to taste the typical marzipans and almond pastries. Free time to relax or buy those last souvenirs. In the afternoon we will drive to Palermo for our last night in Sicily. (BB FC)

Day 8 (Saturday): Palermo.
Pack up your souvenirs and your memories, time to say goodbye to Sicily. Independent transfer to Palermo airport. (BB)

          Day 2 - Optional excursion to Segesta
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2 (Sunday): Palermo, Segesta and Palermo.
This afternoon's optional tour suggestion is Segesta, the least ruined ruin on the island looks as if it were built yesterday. Segesta's ancient Greek temple makes a valid claim to being the best preserved in the world, and its amphitheatre hilltop position on Mount Barbaro is Sicilies most stunning. The magnificent Doric temple stands as it was abandoned with a roof that was never added and unfluted pillars, is the highlight of the large archaeological park. The archaeological site reflects the presence of several ancient civilizations, beginning with the mysterious Elymians. Return to Palermo.

          Day 5 - Optional excursion 1: Etna Jeep tour with light lunch

Day 5 (Wednesday): Taormina, Mount Etna by Jeep and Taormina.
Today an off-road driver/escort will pick you up at your hotel to begin your trip to our famous volcano Etna. You will travel by Jeep from the base of Etna to her often snow-covered summit. Highlights include: Mount Fontana (view of Bove Valley), the Thieves Cave (grotta dei ladroni), the extinct craters of Sartorius Mounts, and the lava flow from the 2002 eruption. Light lunch at a farmhouse will give you a taste of typical Sicilian dishes. Next you will experience an off-road drive along the Linguaglossa, Castiglione, and Alcantara Gorges area. Return to Taormina in the afternoon. (L)

          Day 5 - Optional excursion 2: Etna with light lunch at Etna Winery

Day 5 (Wednesday): Taormina, Mount Etna Winery and Taormina.
Just a short drive takes us to the main visitor area on the slopes of Mt. Etna. Those interested in going to the upper Etna craters will have the option to purchase cable car tickets on the spot (weather and volcanic conditions permitting) to experience the lava fields and panoramic view from Europe's highest and active volcano on their own. Next we will visit a winery and farmhouse. This estate also produces olive oil, grappa, sparkling wine, and traditionally produced local food.  We will take pleasure in a typical Sicilian light lunch at the farmhouse. This afternoon back to Taormina. (L)

          Day 5 - Optional excursion 3: Taormina Gourmet Cooking Course

Day 5 (Wednesday): Taormina Gourmet Cooking Course (H 9:00 AM - H 1:00 PM).
Independently arrive at a local restaurant in Taormina where we will be greeted by Chef Antonio Orlando and Chef Donna Maria. Next a walk takes us to a nearby open air market where we'll purchase fresh fruit, vegetables and all the ingredients necessary for the cooking experience. Back at the restaurant we will start cooking. At the end of the cooking course, we will enjoy our delectable creations with the perfect compliment a unique Sicilian wine. Dessert follows accompanied by a typical local dessert wine. (L)

The Driver-Escort or Tour Director, who is not a licensed local guide (Italian Law prohibits unlicensed guides inside sites) provides basic historical and site information preparing you to visit sites on your own.
