A unique tour starting in PALERMO follows the footsteps of the Jewish community in Sicily, departures are private and ON REQUEST for English speaking clients only, with boutique lodging in former villas, visits the principal ancient sites of Sicily, and those of the early Jewish settlements. Jews have left their mark in many Sicilian areas, from their language, to their culinary traditions, to the topography of cities, and in the names of the people. If you would like to explore the fifteen centuries of Jewish history on our beautiful island this is your tour…

          Day by day itinerary
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 (Saturday): Palermo.
Welcome to the wonderful island of Sicily! After landing at Palermo airport please proceed through the routine arrival checks and collect your luggage. Outside of customs, you will find the driver with a sign with your full name. Transfer to your hotel. Tonight, meet your fellow travelers and Tour Director who will make brief introduction, afterwards enjoy a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

Day 2 (Sunday): Monreale and Palermo.
After breakfast, we will walk the narrow streets of the vestiges of the Jewish quarter in the historic centre of the city. Using the writings of medieval Jewish travelers, we will explore the

Palermo Sicily region tours
site of the Synagogue while we learn about the large Jewish community, who lived in the capital city in ancient days. To engender a deeper understanding of the interaction between Jews and both the religious and political powers of that time, we will walk to the Duomo and the imposing Norman Palace. Next you will visit the Palatine Chapel, the architecturally significant achievement of Roger II. Today's exploration finishes at the Norman royal palace of the Zisa, ibuilt in Norman Arab style it features a Hebrew inscription and a menorah. 
Piaza Armerina villa
Our next destination is Piazza Armerina* for a visit to the ruins of the Roman Villa of Casale. The fabulous mosaics discovered here are highly regarded by scholars of antiquity. In the afternoon, we visit the Baroque town of Caltagirone, known as "the city of ceramics." Ceramics have been produced here for over 1000 years. Take a stroll through the city center and climb the 142 steps decorated with ceramic
tiles while shopping for Sicilian ceramics. Free time. Return to our hotel for dinner. *(From November 1, 2008 the Roman Villa of Casale in Piazza Armerina will be closed for renovation, we will advise our clients of the estimated new opening date as soon as we have it). (BB D)

Day 6 (Thursday): Leonforte, Agira, Mount Etna Winery and Taormina.
A brief journey takes us to the picturesque city of Agira to visit the Synagogue whose magnificent stone portal of the Aron Hakodesh has a Hebrew inscription. A unique example of Jewish architecture, the portal opens a view into a thriving Jewish community of medieval Sicily. Driving north soon takes us from the base of Volcano Etna to her often snow-covered summit. We will visit the upper craters, by cable car (weather and volcanic conditions permitting) to experience the lava fields and incredible landscape view from Europe's highest active volcano. Next on to a winery and a farmhouse. This estate also produces olive oil, grappa, sparkling wine, and traditionally produced local food. We will take pleasure in a typical Sicilian light lunch at the farmhouse. This afternoon, back to Taormina and free time. (BB L)

Day 7 (Friday):  Taormina, Syracuse and Taormina.
Syracuse is today's feature, founded by colonists from Corinth in 735 B.C. it once competed with Athens as the greatest city of Magna Grecia. Our tour starts in what is thought to be the earliest Jewish settlement, Acradina. Next a visit the Catacombs of S. Giovanni and the Crypt of S. Marciano, who, according to legend, was killed by the Jews of the city. We will later walk through the island of Ortigia, the picturesque and fascinating original center of Syracuse and discover the narrow streets of the Giudecca (the ancient Jewish quarter). Our next destination is the site of the Synagogue and the Miqwč - a Jewish ritual bath, located 11 metres below ground level it is the most ancient ever found in Europe. Our afternoon will be spent on a guided tour of the exceptional Archaeological Park where we will explore the 5th-century BC Greek Theatre, the stone quarries, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Paradise Quarry. Then back to Taormina. (BB)

Day 8 (Saturday): Taormina, Messina and Taormina. 
A short drive north finds us in the center of Messina where we will visit its ancient Jewish quarter. First we will visit the Norman Cathedral, with its Latin inscription concerning the Jews. We will continue our discovery of the community and see the beautiful Palazzo Penso, which belonged to a Jewish family. Our final destination in Messina is the Regional Archaeological Museum; among its artistic treasures is a remnant of a Synagogue with a Hebraic inscription of inestimable linguistic value. We return to Taormina for an afternoon to visit to the Greek Theatre and its antiquarium, where Greek inscriptions reveal the Jewish presence in the city since the classic age. Lastly, we will take a walk to the site of the Jewish quarter and the mediaeval convent of S. Domenico. (BB)

Day 9 (Sunday): Taormina. 
A free day to explore the town on your own or take a swim in our clear azure waters. Tonight we gather for a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant. (BB D)

Day 10 (Monday): Taormina and Catania. 
Pack up your souvenirs and your memories, time to say goodbye to Sicily as you are transferred to Catania Airport (CTA) for your return flight. (BB)

Day 3 (Monday): Erice & Olive Oil Factory, Trapani, Marsala Winery and Palermo.
An early departure for our tour of western Sicily, which will begin in the hilltop town of Erice. The medieval town of Erice was first settled by the Elymians. We will stroll through the unspoiled town to the Castle built upon the original site of the Temple of Venus. We will finish our visit at a local pastry shop to taste the typical marzipans and almond pastries. Then on to an olive oil factory & farmhouse to enjoy a light lunch of local cuisine. In the afternoon, we journey from Trapani to Marsala traveling along the Salt Way Road past picturesque Sicilian windmills. A tour of the historic saltpan works, where the ancient tradition of harvesting salt from the sea is still practiced, is a highlight of our day. We then continue on to the town of Marsala, best known for its unique wine and probably the most famous wine on the island, where we will go to a local winery and visit the cellars. Later back to Palermo. (BB L)

Day 4 (Tuesday): Palermo, Agrigento and Leonforte (Enna).
Today's drive showcases Sicily's infinite and breathtaking landscapes. Our first destination is Agrigento whose history dates back to 580 BC. A guided tour leads us through the Valley of the Temples; a picturesque group of Greek ruins perched on a hill above the Mediterranean Sea. Our final stop is Leonforte near Enna. This region is known for its production of wheat, citrus fruits, and olive oil. Our lodging tonight will be at Villa Gussio, a long-established Sicilian country hotel. The hotel, a jewel set in the green heart of Sicily, reflects the pride of time honored traditions and love of nature. Dinner at the hotel. (BB D) 

Day 5 (Wednesday): Leonforte, Enna, Piazza Armerina, Caltagirone and Leonfonte.
Today we begin in Enna, an axis of military significance under the Greeks and Romans. In the upper part of the town looms the Lombardia Castle, Sicily's most ancient and well-preserved.
