Scenes are depicted in golden mosaics from the Old and New Testaments. Returning to Palermo you will visit the Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of architectural achievement commissioned by William II's grandfather, Roger II. Our tour continues to Palermo's highlights: Piazza Pretoria and Via Maqueda with its "four corners" converging at a quartet of Baroque palaces dating back to 1560 from the height of Spanish rule. Your afternoon is free to explore the town on your own or OPTIONAL EXCURSION (see optional excursion below). (BB)

Day 3 (Monday): Palermo, Cefalů, Polizzi Generosa and Taormina.
This morning we depart for Cefalů, a charming coastal town, a former fishing village, which is also home to a breathtaking Norman Cathedral with dazzling mosaics. Take a stroll to the city center and down the main street to reach the Cathedral. Next, we drive across the countryside of the Madonie Park showcasing Sicily's great variety of microclimates. The territory of the Madonie mountains is a paradise of contrasts and a bit off the beaten track. We will visit Polizzi Generosa, a delightful town nestled in the heart of the Park. You will experience a simpler time viewing the ancient masseria transformed into a farmhouse, the flourmills utilizing the plentiful water supply of the area, and the furnaces still used today to make ceramics. Enjoy a light lunch at a country trattoria tasting typical local dishes. This afternoon we will continue to Taormina, the principal resort town of Sicily. (BB L)

Soon we will arrive at Cirkewwa for our ferry crossing to the sister island of Gozo. During the short (25 minute) ferry crossing we will pass the small island

of Comino. Gozo will charm you the moment you arrive. The lush, verdant, and pastoral island is smaller than Malta. The last stop of the morning is Fontana Cottage to sample local

Day 5 - (Tuesday) Sicily: Catania & Syracuse.
Today we depart to reach Catania, the city of lava, standing in the ominous shadow of Mount Etna. The town is called the city of "black and white": white plaster and marble and black lava form major parts of its architectural adornment. Here, we will visit the old centre of the city in the Piazza Duomo, with the sculpture of the ancient elephant. Then we will drive to Syracuse. On arrival, a walk in the island of Ortygia, the picturesque and densely built original centre of Syracuse. Enjoy lunch at local restaurant. A short drive by Jeep takes us to the slopes of Mt. Etna. Weather and volcanic conditions permitting, we experience the lava fields and incredible views of Europe's highest and most
delicacies including; sun dried tomatoes, olive pate, local cheeselets, wines, liqueurs, and other locally made products, a great opportunity to purchase popular goods such as lace. Free time for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we visit the Azure Window, Malta's natural masterpiece, a spectacular natural landmark. The table-like rock forming an arch, is one of the most photographed vistas of the Maltese Islands. The Inland Sea, Gozo, and Dwejra Bay, were created millions of years ago when two limestone caves collapsed. An optional boat trip, subject to weather conditions (EUR 7.00 is not included in the overall price can be paid on the day) will afford you unique views of the sea locked lake. Our final stop before boarding the ferry for Malta includes a visit to Gozo's main town Victoria and The Citadel. The Citadel a petite fortified city commands the heights above Victoria. The Citadel dates back to an early period when Gozo was under Roman and Arab occupation. The massive walls offer panoramic views of the whole island.
